Program Overview |
|
Human milk imparts many important short and long-term benefits for term and premature infants when compared to formula feeding. The use of fortified human milk for premature infants during their NICU stay depends on maternal commitment as well as adequate milk production, both of which require education and resource allocation. For very low birth weight infants, human milk should be fortified to best support growth and development. Monitoring of nutritional practices at the patient and unit level is integral to the optimal use of human milk for premature infants.
