Program Title:
Tackling Pulmonary Hypertension in Pre-Term Infants - From Identification to Improving Outcomes
Program Date and Location:
Sunday, December 6th, 2015 – 10:00am to 1:45pm|
Marriott Marquis Hotel, Washington, DC
Marquis Salon 6
Program Overview:
Optimal diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in pre-term infants is clinically challenging, as there is currently a lack of consensus on clinical guidelines for neonatologists. As more neonatologists are diagnosing and treating preterm infants for PH, there has been an increase in ongoing research and a national effort to establish clinical guidelines for the management of PH.
PH is a serious condition with a mortality rate between 5-10%. Early recognition of PH in pre-term infants could possibly decrease mortality and improve outcomes associated with the condition. PH in pre-term infants can be difficult to diagnose and has symptoms that overlap with other pulmonary conditions, most notably bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). These overlapping symptoms can include– hypoxia, pulmonary instability, poor feeding and failure to thrive.
This 3 hour course will characterize the problem of PH in pre-term infants, including risk factors, etiologies, and mechanisms of disease. It will also cover the most appropriate approaches to screening, diagnosis, and potential treatments for PH. Throughout the meeting, the panel will discuss challenging cases and key challenges in patient care.
