Steven M. Donn, M.D., Director of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Donn was born in New York City and was raised in the New York Metropolitan Area. His undergraduate education was at the University of Michigan, where he received a B.A. degree in 1971, majoring in both Zoology and German Literature. He obtained his M.D. degree from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1974. He undertook training in General Pediatrics at the University of Vermont - Medical Center Hospital of Vermont from 1975-1978. After completing fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Michigan in 1980, Dr. Donn joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. In 1984 he was promoted to Associate Professor and was named as the Medical Director of the Holden Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the University of Michigan Medical Center, a position he held until 2003. He has been a Professor since 1990 and has been the Director of the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine since 1998.
Dr. Donn is actively involved in teaching, research, and patient care activities. He is a member of numerous professional societies, including elected memberships in the Society for Pediatric Research, the European Society for Pediatric Research, and the American Pediatric Society. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and chairs its national Committee on Medical Liability and Risk Management, and has been the AAP Liaison to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Liability Committee. He has been chosen as one of the “Best Doctors in America” since 1994, and was selected by Child Magazine in 2001 as one of “Ten Pediatricians Who Make a Difference.” He is internationally known for his expertise in the management of respiratory failure in newborns. He has authored more than 150 medical journal articles, edited 17 books and specialty journals, written 165 book chapters, and has produced numerous educational materials on neonatal respiratory complications, hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, and high-technology respiratory support of the newborn. Dr. Donn has been invited internationally to present his research and to teach neonatal intensive care. During his career he has held consulting positions for numerous medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and a healthcare management corporation and serves on the FDA Specialty Panel for Respiratory and Anesthesia Devices.
Dr. Donn lives in Ann Arbor with his wife, Paula. He is an avid astronomer, whose passion for total solar eclipses has taken him all over the world. He also enjoys travel, spectator sports, tennis, jogging, and raising two German Shepherds, Rudy and Ellie. |
